For Churches...

Church leaders should bring awareness to the problem of sexual abuse, both within society and the church. 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys experience sexual abuse before turning 18, and only a small percentage disclose their abuse. Church leaders need to emphasize that preventing and responding to sexual abuse is a core gospel issue and should not be ignored.

Every church must educate its members on how to prevent, identify, and respond to sexual abuse to create a safe environment. This training should be part of onboarding new staff and volunteers working with vulnerable individuals.

To address this issue, church leaders must recognize that relying solely on background checks is inadequate. Ongoing education, awareness, and plans for post-abuse care are vital components of the solution.
